Dredger for Bundeena Ferry
Community pressure has resulted in a about face in the State’s funding for the dregding of the Bundeena ferry channel however Maianbar residents will still be left stuck in the sand.

As previously reported the planned dredging of the Port Hacking had excluded the Bundeena ferry channel as it was not deemed to be a major navigational channel. Ferry operators raised the warning flag that if the channel was not dredged that in coming years the resulting build up of sand would mean the ferry would have to take a longer route which would extend commuting times and running costs.

With the help of petition circulated by the Ferry operators and a letter by the Bundeena Progress Association State Environment Minister Phil Koperberg has allocated an additional $250,000 to dredge the ferry channel. The dredging is scheduled from the middle of November to the beginning of December.

The funding of ferry services to Bundeena has been a contentious one with the State not prepared to fully fund it as it does other ferry services in NSW. While the State funded $700,000 for the planned wharf upgrade it had to be matched by Sutherland Shire Council. Furthermore, Council will have to fund any cost overruns. The Bundeena Progress Association has formed a delegation to approach the State government on funding issues.

Meanwhile in Maianbar residents have been left stuck in the sand. No funding extension has been allocated and the current channel to Maianbar is unusable at times and is expected to get worse in coming years. While no commercial traffic regularly traverses the channel the recent bush fire in October highlighted that it could be used for evacuation purposes.
