Upto 100 fire fighter crews battled a bush fire at Cabbage Tree Creek in the Royal National Park and were able to contain it from spreading.

The fires broke at around midnight Sunday. Rural Fire Service crews made up of 10 brigades including those from Bundeena and Maianbar arrived on the scene. Additional personnel from both police and ambulance services were also on site.

No direct track access to the fire was available so crews had to chainsaw their way in from Maianbar Rd. The fire was approximately five hectares in size.

High temperatures and severe north westerly winds fanned the flames. There was a potential  danger of the fire crossing into Bundeena Drive and Woodfield Ave. Fortunately the winds dropped off and the fire was under control by early morning.

Access to Bundeena and Maianbar were restricted to residents early Monday. Helicopter water cannons snuffed out the remaining fire during the day with crews on the scene til the afternoon. No damage to private property occurred.

Cause of the fire is still under investigation though fireworks are suspected as there were reports of them being heard and seen by local residents.
