Royal National Park Speed Sign
The recent Royal National Park Traffic Summit highlighted a number of safety concerns which may see the maximum road speed in the park reduced to 60 kmh and surveillance cameras installed. Video

The summit was held by Sutherland Police in early July and was attended by 30 people including representatives from Bundeena Progress Association, Bundeena Maianbar Chamber of Commerce, State MP Paul Mcleay, Sutherland Shire Council, the RTA, National Parks and Wildlife Service, National Parks Association along with local cycling and motorcycle groups.

Among the statistics revealed was the number of accidents and fatalities that have occured in the Royal National Park. Over the last ten years there have been 8 deaths the most recent which took place on Bundeena Dr last year. During 2007 there were 60 accidents and so far in 2008 there have been 32. Of the deaths that had occurred the majority were young male motorcyclists.

A number of measures have already been initiated by authorities in recent months to combat these statistics. These have included a higher police presence on weekends which has seen a drop in accidents as well as road resurfacing works by the RTA. The RTA has plans for additional road resurfacing for Sir Betram Stevens Drive. Motorcycling groups though had questioned the quality of the road resurfacing.

Other suggestions had also been made by the various representatives at the meeting. These included lowering the maximum speed in the park from 80kmh to 60kmh, installing mirrors on corners and improving the road signage. Police are also considering installing surveillance cameras at all entrances to the park with a focus on combatting crimes such as car burnings and vandalism.
