Royal National Park Roads
The recent roadworks in the Royal National Park are the first of more to come though traffic concerns have triggered a planned summit to address speeding motorists.

The month of May saw a major section of Sir Betram Stevens Drive shutdown during business hours for a two week period with Bundeena Maianbar residents having to commute outside of the park via Waterfall during these times. The shutdown was required for road resurfacing of the worst section of Sir Betram Stevens Drive south of Warumbul Rd. The resurfacing involved the levelling of the road and a primer seal being applied. A final seal will be undertaken in late 2008 or early 2009.

Road resufacing also occured in May at the Royal National Park entrance on Farnell Ave. Further pavement works are planned for the second half of 2008 in selected sections of Sir Bertram Stevens Drive in the adjoining 2 kilometres south of the recent road work near Warumbul Rd

Sutherland Council is also reviewing planned works for Maianbar Road with funds allocated from the Federal goverment. The works will also include a 1.6 kilometre section of the road within the Royal National Park. The reconstruction of Maianbar Road will also include cycle lanes though as Council is not the “Road Authority” for the Royal National Park section it will have to be assessed separately.

Motorcycling groups are also calling for improvements to the Royal National Park after a Bonnyrigg woman on May 13th crashed her motorcycle on a straight section of Sir Betram Stevens Drive. It is believed her bike flipped over multiple times after she lost control of her motorcycle while riding over a pot hole. The horrendous crash resulted in critical injuries with her fighting for her life in intensive care. 18 of the 45 crashes in the Royal National Park during 2007 involved motorcycles.

In early July a special Royal National Park Traffic Summit will be held by Sutherland Police. The summit is to bring together Government (police, RTA, National Parks and Wildlife Services, local council and state Members of Parliament) and Non-Government (residents, legitimate park users etc) stakeholders to focus on problems, and discuss solutions to issues in the Royal National Park, particularly speeding motorists.
