State MP Paul McLeay puts in a days work at a couple of local Bundeena businesses.
The Bundeena Maianbar Chamber of Commerce hosted Paul McLeay, State Member for Heathcote, at an annual Pollies for Small Business 2008 event in Bundeena on 13 August.  Paul spent several hours working at the Bundeena IGA and The Fringe Café as part of a state-wide program that provides opportunities for Members of Parliament to experience first hand some of the everyday challenges faced by small business operators.   Paul McLeay working in BundeenaPaul McLeay presents Bundeena Award

Paul started the day unloading an IGA delivery truck along with John and Marie Filwarkiw, IGA owners, who took the opportunity to describe some of the unique business challenges they encounter in a small remote community.  Later, Beck Palmer from The Fringe Café put Paul to work making coffees, preparing sandwiches, and serving customers.  Both businesses and our local MP believed that the day’s events were worthwhile.

Pollies for Small Business is co-sponsored by the NSW Business Chamber and local Chambers of Commerce.  The week long event originated in 2002 and has been a resounding success ever since, with 83 Pollies participating in the program in 2007.  President of the Bundeena Maianbar Chamber of Commerce, Marion Stehouwer, said the Pollies for Small Business program is a practical way of ensuring politicians have a better understanding of what it is really like to be a small business owner in our communityPaul McLeay at Bundeena CafePaul McLeay presents Bundeena Award

This year’s Pollies event was the first for the newly formed Bundeena Maianbar Chamber of Commerce and provided an opportunity for its Executive Committee to raise a number of issues affecting its members with Paul McLeay.  The local chamber has also been working closely with the Sutherland Shire Council, National Parks, Sutherland Police, and other organizations to ensure its voice is heard in the community consultation process.  More information about the Bundeena Maianbar Chamber of Commerce can be found at:  bundeenainfo.com/bmcc.
