Bundeena Bush Fire Brigade in Action
A successful open day was interrupted as the bush fire brigade was called to action. Videos

Warm weather and sunny skies helped encourage a great turnout.

The brigade ran live demonstrations during the day. They are often called out to motor vehicle accidents in the Royal National Park. In this particular demo they had to rescue passengers from a burning car and then extinguish the fire.

There was also a special unveiling of the new fire danger sign located at the front of the station. The sign was specially made by local business Fab Signs.

However, the fun was interrupted at mid-day as the brigade was called to duty to deal with a accident involving two colliding motorcycles near Garie beach. The two riders were airlifted to hospital by a NSW Ambulance chopper as the brigade gave fire cover at the scene and assisted Ambulance and Police with patient support and preservation of the crash scene.

However, the day did not end there as later that afternoon a strong southerly change moved with a little rain and lightning. It is believed that a lightning strike ignited bush in the Bulgo Creek area adjacent to Sir Bertrams Drive and in rugged terrain. Initially Bundeena and Waterfall brigades responded to the scene but before the night was over personnel from NPWS, Engadine, Loftus and Heathcote brigades were assisting to locate and extinguish the fire. After laying two hose lines and dropping 80 metres into the Bulgo Creek gully it was the early hours of Sunday morning before Brigades were released from the scene and returned to their stations. NPWS personnel kept a patrol thru the night.

After an extensive clean up of hoses and vehicles on Sunday morning the brigade was asked to assist NSW Ambulance at Wattamolla with an injured fisherman trapped on rocks. Fortunately they were not required at the scene as the Ambulance chopper had the rescue well in hand and winched fisherman and crew to the chopper. One patient was then transported by air to hospital.
