Why do so many acclaimed artists and musicians make their home in Bundeena, in the scenic surrounds of Sydney’s Royal National Park? Find out at the 15th Art of Living Festival from March 12 to 14, 2010.
Friday night kicks off the festival with a sale of works by local artists, ceramicists and sculptors and a retrospective look at Garry Shead, one of Bundeena’s most high-profile artists. On Saturday, festivalgoers can join in the affordable family fun and games at the Olde Village Fair. Sunday brings the festival highlight with free live music all day. Standouts include country music rising star and Bundeena resident Brad Cole and hot R&B tribute band Stand By Me along with a line-up of other great talent.
Celebrating its 15th year, the festival is hosted by the twin villages of Bundeena and Maianbar located in Sydney’s Royal National Park, one of Australia’s most creative communities and home to a swag of well-known and emerging artists and musicians.
This year’s featured artist is a long-time Bundeena resident and one of Australia’s most acclaimed and commercially successful artists, Garry Shead, and a fascinating retrospective of his artistic career and his work will be on display. Former fashion designer and illustrator Ike Glatz has been selected as the festival’s emerging artist and her quirky art works will also be on view.
Friday’s launch includes an exhibition by the area’s many talented artists with all works for sale. Pick up an original artwork from one of the community’s established or emerging artists, ceramicists and sculptors. Saturday is a family-friendly day with a back to basics Village Fair offering all the traditional – and affordable – activities from days gone by: egg and spoon races, dog show and the Bundeena Bolt, a running race with cash prizes for the fastest man and woman, prizes for best produce and baking. Plus, in keeping with the area’s creative bent, there’ll be interactive art activities to engage the artist in everyone such as the mosaic making event and make-your-own windchime event (Sunday). 
Sunday is the musical highlight of the weekend with free performances by seven live acts. “This year, we’ve got an amazing line-up of local and about-to-be-famous performers,” says Festival president Charles Conrade. “You can see them in Bundeena and say you saw them here first. And we are continuing the tradition of free live entertainment at Bundeena’s big day out,” Conrade says.
Roll out the picnic rug under a shady tree and sit back and enjoy the show in the beautiful surroundings of the Royal National Park.
The full line-up includes standout R&B tribute band The Stand By Me Motown Show, country singer/songwriter and Bundeena resident Brad Cole, local legends Moth Jam, Jazz By The Sea quartet, blues rockers Chris Turner and the Wolftones, and rock, soul and groove duo DivaMania. Plus talented local dancers will entertain the crowds between acts.
