Local chanteuse Dani Karis along with Moth Jam rock Sydney’s landmark indie venue The Annadale. Video

Danis Karis with Moth Jam at The Annadale By Rowena Mary (independent review)

Dani Karis’ recent performance at the Annandale Hotel showcased a highly assured singer/ songwriter. This popular Bundeena local, who seemed to have drawn a large and vocal crowd of supporters, alternately mesmerised and rocked the audience. Karis’ engaging stage presence is matched by the intensity of her self-penned lyrics. (The poignant Move Me, Make Me was a standout, while Shots are Lined up on the Bar had everyone dancing.)

The prolific writer, who has also played as a solo acoustic artist, has said, “The most important aspect for me in a song is truth and creativity in lyrics” – borne out in everything she chose to sing at this particular gig. But, while the songs were unremittingly thought-provoking, her performance was never too ‘heavy’.

Karis also projects a sense of fun and familiarity, and clearly shares a strong sense of musicianship with her band – Tony Wilson (guitar, vocals), Phil Gissing (sax, flute, harmonica), Dennis (drums) and Chester (bass). With a sweet yet powerful voice that calls to mind a slightly-less kooky Tori Amos, and an authentic, commanding presence, Dani Karis is a refreshing and talented addition to the Sydney live scene. One thing’s for sure – the punters absolutely loved her.
