Cook has been held by outgoing MP Bruce Baird since 1998. The seat which was established in 1906 was held by Labor from it's inception til 1969. However, since 1975 it's been in Liberal hands.

The 2004 election was comfortably won by the Liberals by a 63% vs 36% margin and is considered a safe seat for them. However, if current national polls are any indication coupled with the retirement of Bruce Baird sentiments may favour a change in party.
