The NSW Government has rejected a Parliamentary inquiry recommendation to improve Bundeena Maianbar ambulance services.

The Inquiry into the NSW Ambulance Service recommended that “the Ambulance Service of NSW provide a dedicated ambulance service in Bundeena, consisting of an ambulance station or a car stationed with 24 hour rostered cover.” In all 44 of the 45 recommendations the Inquiry had made were rejected.

“The incompetent Rees Government’s response to the recommendation relating to Bundeena ambulance services shows just how out of touch Labor has become,” said Inquiry Chair Robyn Parker.
 
“Nathan Rees and Health Minister John Della Bosca have completely ignored the concerns of local residents and ambulance officers,” she said.
 
“There was ample evidence presented to the Inquiry to support the Committee’s recommendation.
 
“I’m concerned that someone will die unnecessarily before the incompetent Rees Labor Government acts,” Ms Parker said.
 
Liberal Duty Member for Heathcote John Ajaka said the local community has been let down again by the Rees Labor Government.
 
“Many local residents contributed to the Upper House inquiry and they presented a sound argument for the need to improve ambulance services in Bundeena and Maianbar,” Mr Ajaka said.
 
“The local community has every right to be angry and disappointed with Labor’s response to the Inquiry recommendation.
 
“Member for Heathcote Paul McLeay should tonight be banging on the Premier’s door, demanding he overturn Labor’s decision not to support the Inquiry’s recommendation.
 
“Residents can rest assured that this fight is not over. I will continue to lobby the Rees Labor Government in an effort to force them to commit to providing a dedicated ambulance service in Bundeena,” Mr Ajaka said.

Local resident and Ambulance Action Group spokesperson Tamsin Clarke said “We’re treated as ‘metropolitan’ for the purposes of comparing call out rates per suburb (we have, however, higher call out rates than a list of rural towns which already have ambulance stations), but are not treated as ‘metropolitan’ for purposes of meeting the ambulance service’s target response times.”

NSW Health Minister John Della Bosca defended the decision saying present arrangements gave the communities access to emergency care 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“This is supported by the on-call services of three ambulance paramedics who live in the area, with a standard ambulance patient transport unit and a four-wheel-drive utility vehicle available,” he said.

“A community first-responder scheme for Bundeena has already been established, consistent with services in similar communities. This is being provided in partnership with the NSW Fire Brigades in Bundeena and has been in place since August 2008.”

It is expected that ambulance services will be contentious issue for Bundeena Maianbar residents in the next State election.
