Authorities are preparing to trial a Canadian developed wildlife management system which is hoped to control rusa deer numbers in the Royal National Park.
Decoys placed near local wildlife populations are scented with pheromones to attract the bucks initially.
The Canadian system was originally developed to control moose numbers in Banff National Park just outside of Calgary, Alberta. The system uses a series of decoys to distract the bucks during rutting season
After several minutes exposure to the pheromones the buck is further enticed. The system has been successful so much so that local authorities are hoping to duplicate the success on Australian native species.
As sperm production halts during the rutting season a scarce opportunity is lost. The system involves no violent termination of wildlife which has pleased conservation groups who have protested in the past about current culling procedures.
