Local musician Dani Karis has been shortlisted for three awards by the Australian Songwriters Association.
Musically speaking, 2011 has been a big year for local songwriter Dani Karis. She released her debut album, Sword Crown and Creed in January, won an Australian Independent Music Video Award for her collaboration with local film-maker Valerie Etienne and a month ago learned that three songs from her album have been shortlisted for the highly contested ASA Awards.
Dani has also been nominated for Songwriter of the Year and has been asked to perform at what The Drum Media describes as a “glittering music industry event” on November 30. She will be in good company; not only will Bundeena muso Tony Wilson be joining her onstage, but Steve Kilbey (The Church) will be inducted into the ASA Hall of Fame that night and will be playing his hits.
“Above all I appreciate the nomination as a great comment on my album,” says Dani. “The ASA Awards are judged by three consecutive panels of industry experts so even making the shortlist feels like quite an achievement.”
Dani describes her album as something of a village effort. Leanne Thompson created the beautiful cover art. Friends babysat her children so she could go away and record and local photographers, designers and manufacturing pros were generous with their talents and time. “Not to mention the village characters who inspired some of the song-writing,” Dani adds.
