The case against dogs on Bundeena beaches

Egrets at Cabbage Tree Creek
One sign gives a clue why dogs are banned at certain beaches in the Bundeena area.

The sign located at Deeban Spit and Constables Point areas which borders Maianbar and Bonnie Vale respectively. It states various restrictions on activities in the area including on dogs and are enforced by Council. The protections which are in place to protect migratory bird species are legislated under several international agreements with China (1986), Japan (1974) and Korea (2007).

Among the species protected are the Eastern Curlew which migrates 26,000 km from Siberia, the Bar-tailed Godwit which migrates from China, the great (or white) egret (pictured above at Cabbage Tree Creek circa 1999) and the pied oyster-catcher.
