The notable changes to the town centre include

  • a new playground facilty for children
  • an amphitheatre stage with seating
  • traffic calming barriers along Brighton St. to reduce vehicle speeds
  • reoriented car parking on both sides of Brighton St.
  • improved pedestrian access

Council presented the plans in September of 2005 with community comments received in October of the same year. Feedback overall has been positive but the changes to Brighton St. has met some resistance. As a result it is likely the plans for the green open space areas will go ahead as is with the Brighton St. ammendments to be revisited with further community consultation.

The initial construction is expected to start in September or October and  will require the removal of three decaying non-native trees adjacent to the playground. An additional four trees across from the IGA are also planned for removal at a later stage. All trees removed will be replaced by native species.

The hopes are the playground can be in by this Christmas with the Brighton St. redevelopement started in autumn of 2007.
