An outbreak of serious bushfires in Queensland has seen Bundeena RFS volunteers called up to give their interstate counterparts a hand.

Bundeena Rural Fire Brigade members Dean Nightingale, Brian Hartrick and Scott Burton have traveled to Bundaberg as part of a Sutherland team to assist their Queensland colleagues in what has become a protracted battle to control the many outbreaks in that state. The three Bundeena firefighters left by air on Monday the 19th and are expected to return this Friday 23rd. Fighting fires interstate is nothing new to Bundeena members who have been called to assist in Victoria on many occasions however the journey north is believed to be a first.

At the time of writing the Bundeena crew were working in the Gin Gin area as part of a Sutherland team involved in patrol and ready to respond to any outbreak. Locals have not had any more than 10mm of rain since June so what grass is left is tinder dry and can explode into flame with little effort. Local weather is expected to remain warm and dry with no relief in sight. A long campaign is expected.

Meanwhile locally recent good rain has seen an easing to immediate bushfire concerns around Bundeena but residents are encouraged to use this lull in the dry to prepare their properties and remain ever vigilant to detioriating weather conditions when they occur.
