Bundeena artist Garry Shead has sold one of his paintings at auction for $130,000.
The painting titled Envoy III (D.H. Lawrence Series) was originally a gift to his wife Judit who recently passed away in May of cancer. Shead had put the painting on the market with Judit's blessing to help offset the medical costs during her illness.
Shead an Archibald winner painted the work in 1994. The painting, one of a series, shows Judit in a dream state with the image of a kangaroo which was inspired by the D.H. Lawrence novel of the same name.
The couple resided in Bundeena with Judit working as a sculptor. Shead will be organising an exhibition of both their works in November at the Sydney's Australian Galleries. Shead as a tribute also plans to have one of her sculptures permanently installed near Bundeena wharf.
