ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING AND THE GENERAL MEETING

AGM Will be held at BUNDEENA COMMUNITY CENTRE HALL on Saturday 27 February 2007 at 2PM.  The AGM and the election of office bearers will take place prior to the general  meeting.  Everyone is welcome to attend the meeting and join us for afternoon tea at its  conclusion.

PIease note: All other monthly general meetings  are  held on the last  Tuesday of the  month at the Community Centre Hall at 7.30 pm

Shopping Centre in Turmoil

Shops in Brighton Street are suffering loss of business, dust and noise as drainage works from the development on the old Conference Centre site continue along the main street

Shop owners complained that they had been given no notice of the proposed works and that no one had spoken to them about possible disruptions.

These works are part of a private construction and are not being carried out by Sutherland Council. It appears that there is more work to be done and Clr Bob Spencer has requested that council send an engineer to inspect the works on Monday to ensure that there is a minimum of disruption to shops in the area.

The Worst is Yet to Come

If the Land and Environment Court approves the development on the Corner Store site (no word...on this decision yet), the excavation works will be a nightmare for all businesses in the main street. There will be over 5000 tonnes of excavation, which will mean noise, dust and trucks, the likes of which Bundeena has never seen before.

Jeff Tarrant, owner of the Manna Cafe, said that the works in progress now are miniscule to what lies ahead. He continually warned that development of the type proposed on the corner site would result in massive (for Bundeena) excavation with devastating impacts on shopkeepers and great inconvenience for shoppers.

Discussion about these issues is on the agenda for Saturday.

Roadworks

The repairs to Sir Bertram Stevens Drive are proceeding well with minimal disruption. However, the long straight section just past the top of Artillery Hill has been bi-passed, so we hope that this section is to be ripped up and completely re-sealed. It is the worst part of the road and many cars move to the other side of the road to avoid the rough surface.

Rock Slide onto Midden

In response to our query about the slide, we were told that a council engineer had inspected the site last week. It was stated that there was no activity in that area by the developer. It was determined that the tree roots of the fig tree had split the rock, causing the slide. Last night the tree fell down the slope. The views of residents would be welcomed at the meeting.

 

Long Wall Mining

Sutherland Shire Environment Centre called a meeting at Hazlehurst on 8 February over proposed new areas for long wall mining. There have been subsidences to upper reaches of the George's River. In long wall mining there are no pillars left to support the roof and all of the coal is mined. This does lead to subsidence in some places.

The particular concern about the new mines is that they will be under Woronora Dam wall and there could be a possibility of cracking to the wall. The mining company and the state government say there is no possibility of this happening. We hope not.

Federal and State members of parliament attended and addressed the meeting. They received a mixed reception from the gallery as they grappled with trying to balance the huge amount of money generated by coal mining and the damage to the environment and river systems.
